Cover Up Hand Tattoos
Hand cover-ups are tricky: the skin is thin, moves constantly and fades faster than anywhere else. Dark, bold designs that use the hand's natural shape — roses, skulls, mandalas — work best and stay readable.
- TIPS · HAND
- Keep the design bold; fine detail blurs on hands.
- Expect touch-ups as hand ink fades.
- Finger tattoos are the hardest to cover.
Cover up hand tattoos stay bold because hand ink fades
Cover up hand tattoos have less room than a forearm, and the skin moves and fades faster. Bold flowers, a dark butterfly, or a small blackwork shape stay readable. Fine lines blur. If the old tattoo sits across the back of the hand, the new piece often continues onto the wrist so the edges of the old ink are inside the design.
Finger lettering is the hardest of these. A cover on a finger stays small and dark, and it usually needs a touch-up later. Photograph the whole hand, including the wrist, so the preview can show that extension.

Hand cover-up FAQ
Can I cover up hand tattoos?
Sometimes. Hands are small, the skin moves, and the ink fades faster than on a forearm. Cover up hand tattoos that last are bold and dark. Fine lines blur. The piece often continues onto the wrist.
Can finger tattoos be covered?
They are the hardest. A cover on a finger stays small and dark, and it usually needs a touch-up later. An artist looking at the skin makes that call.
